Our Week in PreK:
We had a wonderful week of learning and excitement in the PreK classroom.  This week the children were ready to integrate some of their own inquiry and interests into small group learning time, and we had a lot of fun exploring the questions they proposed!  We also continued explorations of numeracy during group time, worked on our understanding of "peace" and collaborated with the school community for our Peace Day Assembly, and had fun engaging in some dinosaur pretend play over the course of the week.

During small group work, some children created an interactive game based on a simple game that had been shared with us from another school.  The idea was to create a print using an every day object, then ask the person playing the game to guess what made that mark.  In this way, we looked to engage the CAC community playfully, while working on emergent literacy skills, collaborating to create a group project, and using our core value of creativity to think about objects and how they can be perceived in different ways.

Another group worked to create a "PreK Restaurant" where we would serve real food items to the community.  We opened on Wednesday, serving lemonade to the Kindergarten teachers and office staff.  The students worked to name their restaurant and create signs for the restaurant including the name (Yummy), open and closed signs, and a sign advertising what the restaurant would be serving.  They made pink lemonade by squeezing the lemons, scooping and squishing pomegranate seeds, and mixing the juice with water and a bit of sugar.  When the restaurant opened, they greeted guests and served them.

Here are some more photos from our week together:

Students made "spiders," "jellyfish," and "monsters" with an open-ended play dough provocation.

Next Week:
In our upcoming week the study groups will continue their work on relationships within the school, learn about who works at our school, and learn how to develop positive relationships.  The restaurant group will continue to offer food to the CAC faculty, and the riddle group will create some new game cards and bring the game to more teachers and other classrooms to allow them a chance to play. We will explore the concepts of "one more," "more," and "less" while playing math games.

We will have an announced fire drill on Tuesday, September 26th.  The students have practiced what to do in case of an emergency and we have talked about it in child-friendly language.  They know that we usually never have a fire in our school, but it's responsible to have a plan for staying safe.  We talk about plans a lot in PreK, so this makes sense to the children!  We practiced as a class, and on Tuesday they will know what to expect when they hear the fire alarm and go outside with the whole school.  If you have any questions, please be sure to email me.

Reminders:
Please be sure to pack your child's library books and bags each Sunday.  Thank you!

We all appreciate when families send in healthy morning snacks!  This helps your child focus on learning tasks and routines, as well as supports them eating their lunch at lunch time.  The PreK morning routine is to drop off their separate morning snack in the serving bowls at our door.  Most students are doing this independently now.  Some great snack ideas include: apples, melon, carrot sticks, cucumber, peppers, grapes, mango, pomegranate, and more!  They will be eating lunch just one hour after their snack, so it shouldn't be a big meal- just a mid-morning pick-me-up.  Thanks for supporting nutritious choices with our youngest learners at CAC!

Upcoming Events:
Monday, September 25th will be an early release day; students are dismissed at 11:30.  We will still be eating lunch in the PreK classroom on early release days.  Thank you in advance for making arrangements for your child's pick-up at 11:30.

Tuesday, September 26th is our first house event for PreK!  The students will be accompanied by their fifth grade buddies throughout the event.  We will leave our classroom by 7:50 in order to arrive at the field before the event starts at 7:55.  If you arrive after we have left the classroom, join us at the field and help your child find his or her house color.  Any teacher you see will support the PreK students in finding their buddies.

Click here to review your child's house color.  Our official house shirts haven't arrived yet, so you can encourage your child to dress in his or her house color with any clothes you have at home.  We earn points for our team by wearing our house colors on house event days!

We will have an all-ES Respect celebration on Thursday, September 28th.  This month, we have been talking about the CAC Core Value of Respect.  In PreK, respect means letting other people know you care about them and making them feel important.  It means treating other people the way you'd like to be treated, and using manners.  We have been talking about this during circle, as well as throughout the day.  On Thursday, elementary schools students and staff will gather at the end of the day (2:45) to have a walk through our self-portrait banners and celebrate respect, as well as the creativity and diversity of all of our students.   At 2:55, each class will be offered a popsicle treat from the PTO. Students will be dismissed at 3:05 as usual.  PreK after-care students are invited, and students who are dismissed from the core program at 1:00 are welcome back to join us at 2:45. Thank you.

Please be sure to check the calendar to the left of this blog post for important PreK dates.

After-Care:
Last week the children explored the color purple with an art activity, play dough, and tasting purple fruits and vegetables!  Next week they will investigate the color pink.  Not only are these investigations fun and engaging for the children, but they are multi-sensory and provide wide opportunities for language usage.

Taste-testing plums and beets!

During quiet time, some students rest after our busy morning while others look at books or engage in a quiet activity.

Circle Solutions:
In our past week we talked about the idea of peace while continuing to introduce the Circle Solutions framework to the children.  Next week we will be talking more about respect, and we hope to welcome our fifth grade buddies to circle with us on Thursday.

Parents' Corner:
Consequences and rewards can be a big factor in behavior management strategies with children, but are they effective?  They often work in the short term, but to help our children as social and emotional learners we have to take the time to truly teach them the skills we hope to see manifest in their behaviors.  This week's article in our parents' corner: Stop trying to find the "perfect consequence."

Our Week in PreK:
This week we continued thinking about numbers and numerals one through five, and how to group items together.  The class grows as a community while we investigate our unit "Myself, My Identity, and Relationships."  This week we talked about families and made more connections within the CAC Community.  We discussed "peace" as we prepare for our upcoming Peace Day Holiday.

The students started off the week with a fun activity during group time: making blueberry muffins for their fifth grade buddies!  One of our PreK students suggested this activity the week previously, and we were delighted to follow through.  Cooking and food is a strong interest in this group, and they are continually interested in developing friendships.  Bringing muffins to our fifth grade buddies was a great way to strengthen the new relationships.  The PreK students made enough so that they could eat one, too!

We continued our exploration of numbers and numerals this week.  A favorite activity was counting the members of our families, using family photos and our re-usable whiteboard sleeves.  The children circled family members, counted them, and then made marks to represent how many people are in their families.  PreK students are not expected to write numerals at this point in the year, although they may recognize the numerals up to four and five.  They are able to represent numbers up to four and five with lines, dots, pictograms, or marks.

The Triangle Group visited the art classroom this week and completed their full-size self portraits in continuation of our studies of our identity.  Please be sure to check out the display outside our classroom to see your child's self-portrait!

Next Week:
Next week we look forward to learning more about our community.  We will follow up on the students' interest in restaurants and food by opening a "PreK Restaurant" and offering some real food items to the CAC Community (teachers and staff) as part of our small group study work.  Another small group will create a riddle game to bring to CAC Community members to see if we can trick anyone.  The students will continue explorations of counting as they learn strategies for counting objects in various formations (circular, array, and scattered configurations objects in addition to linear). We will share this work with you in next week's blog!

After-Care:
This past week the students were exploring the color green.  They went on a walk to collect green leaves from the playground and made prints with them. The students even tasted cucumbers and green peppers!  Next week they will think about the color purple.  They are looking forward to a tissue paper craft, tasting pomegranate and cooked beetroot, and of course making some play dough!

Reminders:
Please be sure to pack your child's library books and bag each Sunday.  Thank you!

If there are any changes in your child's drop off or pick-up routine, be sure to email Ms. Trillian at tclifford@cacegypt.org in advance.  If there are changes during the school day, please call the office as we cannot guarantee we will see an email during teaching hours (we are with the children, not at our computers, between 7:45-3:05).  The office will call our classroom directly.

Upcoming Events:
Next week we have our Peace Day Assembly on Tuesday, September 19th in celebration of World Peace Day.  PreK will attend (we will attend all assemblies and House Events from now on).  Please dress your children in white if possible; we encourage everyone to wear white in recognition of World Peace Day.

On Thursday, September 21st we have no school in recognition of Islamic New Year.

Monday, September 25th is our first early release day.  We will dismiss students at 11:30.  PreK students will eat lunch on half-days, as our lunch time is always at 11:00 in the classroom. Thank you in advance for arranging pick-up plans for your child on this day.

Circle Solutions:
You may have heard about Circle Solutions at CAC.  Circle Solutions is a framework that supports our interactions with children at all grade levels, and promotes student wellbeing, emotional resilience, community building, and more! A big part of Circle Solutions is doing a Circle in the classroom, when we come together to play games and interact with each other at the carpet.  In PreK, we have begun our Circles with a greeting (for example, each child will give a high five to the child next to him or her), then playing a short game called a mix-up (children move around and have fun!), and a closing activity (children take calming breaths or stretch).  Eventually, we will also incorporate small-group and whole-group games, partner activities, and more!

This week our focus was community. Here is a video of the children doing a mix-up game called "the warm wind blows" this week.  This game allows the children to learn more about themselves and what they have in common with each other, while thinking creatively, taking turns, and listening to each other carefully.  One child will say "the warm wind blows for anyone who...... (has a pet dog), (smiled today), (is wearing socks), etc."  Anyone who the statement is true about, will get up and find a new seat.  Then we play again!

Parents' Corner:
The Positive Piscipline approach: Kind, but Firm.  Have you ever felt like you have to give strict orders just to get your child to listen to you?  On the opposite side, do you feel overwhelmed because your child has few or no limits on his or her behavior?  Healthy limits are important in a child's life for him or her to feel safe.

Many people who are drawn to Positive Discipline err on the side of kindness. They are against punishment, but don’t realize that firmness is necessary to avoid permissiveness. Permissiveness is not healthy for children because they are likely to decide, “Love means getting others to take care of me and give me everything I want."

Have faith in your children that they can learn and grow from suffering—especially in a supportive environment. Understand that kind is not always nice, short term. True kindness and firmness together provide an environment where children can develop the “wings” they need to soar through life.

Our Week in PreK:

We had a short week in the classroom together, but we managed to fit in a lot of fun and learning!  This week, we talked about some of the routines of school, we got to know our fifth grade buddies, we had a visit from the music teacher, and we continued to learn more about counting and numerals.

After a long break from school, the PreK students took some time to review how to use certain areas of the classroom and campus safely.  We learned about using glue appropriately (use a little- not a lot!), and then we were able to add glue as a material to our art center during choice time.  The PreK students also reviewed how to take care of Bubbles, our playground expectations, and scissor safety.

We learned a new game this week that can be modified to support numeracy awareness up to six.  We are working on recognizing and counting groups of objects up to three, but will soon be practicing with larger numbers.  This game also provides the opportunity to subitize, or recognize how many in a small group of objects without counting each one.  The children took turns drawing a dot card and then advancing their teddy bears the corresponding number of steps: 1, 2, or 3.  The first bear to reach the honey won!

We had a great time meeting our fifth grade buddies and doing a simple interview to get to know them.  Each PreK student is matched with a fifth grader, and we will meet with them about once a month to read together, do writing or science activities, and more.  Most PreK students have also been matched with a buddy who is on the same house team, so they will accompany them during the house events as well.

Lost & Found

ES Lost and Found is displayed on tables outside the Playground Monitors office. Valuables are held in the Activities Office 7:30 am to 3:30 pm. You may email egergess@cacegypt.org if you have lost something valuable (phone, jewelry, glasses, etc.). Unclaimed items will be donated at the end of the school year. Please ensure that your child’s belongings are clearly labeled.
Part of educating students at CAC is encouraging independence through increasing responsible behaviors. When an item is lost, we encourage students to do the following:
  • Look everywhere
  • Ask others
  • Ask parents to report to the lost and found link - LOST AND FOUND Report LINK
  • Use the same link to report when the item is found

Tuesday, September 12th is our PreK Photo Day!  This is also the all-school photo day.  We will be sure to keep our messy materials in the cabinets on Tuesday, so you can send your child to school in nicer clothes for their photo if you wish.  Please be sure to return the photo envelope, with money, to Ms. Trillian or Ms. Salma by Tuesday morning at the latest.

Parents, we need your help this week.  Please send in a family photo, either with your child or digitally.  We will be using them this week as we discuss our identities.  Selfies are fine, we just want to have a photo of all of you!  Thanks!

After-Care:

Last week, the students enjoyed exploring the color blue using blue puffy paint, eating home-made blueberry muffins, and of course mixing up a batch of blue play dough.

Next week the students will work on the color green!  They can look forward to writing their names in green finger-paint, a green collage, and green taste testing: cucumbers and peppers.

Parents' Corner:

In our classroom, we try to respect the students' ideas, abilities, and personalities in all ways.  This even extends to behavior management!  But how can we respect the child while he or she is making a bad choice?  The Positive Discipline series advocates for the many ways that we can work with children, rather than doing things to children or for children.  In the first few weeks of school, as teachers we have been working on making connections with all of the students so that they can feel like respected, valued, and important members of the community.  When difficult situations arise, be sure to "make a connection before a correction."  Is your child ready to have a conversation, or do they need a hug or for you to just listen first?  Please click here to learn more about the connection before correction technique and how you can apply it in your home.
