Our Week in PreK:

We had a very busy week in the PreK classroom with lots of excitement and so many opportunities to learn and grow!

The children were engaged in learning activities related to their unit of study, living things and growth.  They continued to closely observe the Kindergarteners' chicks, as well as having discussions about pets- especially hamsters.  We are considering inviting a hamster to the class for observation, please let Ms. Trillian know if you have any objections to having a hamster (in a cage) in the classroom for one day.  As of yet there are no animal / dander allergies noted in the class, but please do update if needed.

The students had the chance to work with both the art and drama specialist teachers last week.  They had a lot of fun doing some engaging activities related to the topic of living things!

Here are some more photos from our week together:

Next Week:

We are looking forward to continuing our study work.  One group will continue studying babies and chicks, while the other group will begin studying plants with some planting experiments in the classroom.
We will also continue our numeracy work exploring the concepts of enough, more, and fewer.

Circle Solutions:

Last week the students really enjoyed sharing circle with their 5J buddies!  We talked about creativity and even related it to the Olympics!  The children imagined what type of sport they would play if they were in the Olympics themselves, and then created a figure playing that sport with their buddy.

Reminders:

Parents, please be sure to pack a healthy snack (or two; for morning and afternoon snack) and lunch for your child each day.  Most of the children have been very hungry lately- if your child's lunchbox is coming home empty, try packing a little extra- they might appreciate it!

Upcoming Events:

We are welcoming a guest to the classroom on Thursday and Sunday (March 1st and 4th) of next week from the American School of Bombay's PreK program.  Please join us in making Samantha Wilson feel welcome at CAC!

Wednesday March 7th will be an early release day at 11:30.

We will have no school on Thursday,  March 8th.

Our week in PreK:
We had a very exciting week in the PreK classroom!  The students were learning a lot about the broad topic of "Living Things and Growth" by pursuing different study questions including babies/chicks and pets/hamsters.  Our essential questions include, how do living things grow and change over time, what do living things need to survive, and what habitats do animals live in?  Each study group will answer certain essential questions and share their learning with the whole group.

Our "babies" group started off the week with a "wow!" experience when KGB teacher Mr. Balazs' baby, Mina, came to our class for story time.  The next day, some newly hatched baby chicks arrived in our classroom.  Over the course of the week, the group closely observed the characteristics of the chicks by making drawings, observing over time, using tally marks to record passing days (how old are the chicks?), and reading books.

Of course, all of the children are able to visit the chicks and interact with them, and we all had the opportunity to visit the KG classrooms where the eggs were hatching to learn more about where the chicks had mysteriously appeared from!

Our other study group this week continues an exploration of pets, specifically hamsters.  Students have been interested in creating a large hamster home for their pet play, including creating tunnels, bedrooms, and exercise wheels.  The children began to collaborate and share their ideas about what they know about hamsters already and what they wish to learn.  Each child in the study group created a drawing to visually express their understanding of hamsters at this point in the exploration.

Plans for an exercise wheel.

"Will you fit inside the wheel?" "I don't know, let's try and see."

The children have continued their conceptual counting work by exploring the idea of first and last in various configurations.  We played with this concept by pretending we were riding in a boat- first a long, thin one where we sat in a line (the first and last to get in the boat were easy to identify) and then a wider boat where we sat in two rows (the first and last to get in the boat were harder to identify).  We also tried to count various objects in circular configurations including the group of PreK students, a circle of dinosaurs, and finally a circle of X's (moving from different objects, to similar, to identical).

Here are some more photos from our week together:

Playing with a new light engagement in the building area.

Color mixing and magic potions as a fine motor invitation.

A hamster and his hamster juice box.

The completed hamster wheel.

During P.E. the children pretended to be eggs and played a movement game.

Next week:
The students will continue with their small group work as they ask questions about living things and growth related to their chosen interests.  Math topics will focus the idea of not enough, enough, and "some extra."

Circle Solutions:
The PreK class will have another circle with our buddy class, 5J in the upcoming week.  We can't wait to talk more about character strengths and what they might look like to both the youngest and oldest students at CAC Elementary!

After-Care:
The children will engage in some fun sensory art activities this week including fluffy shaving cream paint, reflective paint, and finger paint.

Reminders:
Urgent: Parents, please send extra clothes to school for your child to wear in case their clothing gets wet or dirty! This includes a full change of clothing: shirt, pants, underwear, socks, and even shoes if possible.  Thank you!  If you have CAC clothing at home, please return it!

Families, we apologize that we are no longer able to offer silverware in the classroom for students to eat at school as all of our school spoons and forks have been taken home and not returned.  Please pack appropriate silverware for your child to eat his or her food for snack and lunch.  If you have anything from the CAC PreK class at home, please return as this is school property.  Thank you.

Guest readers are welcome to our story time on Wednesdays at 10:05.  Please bring your own book- you can choose one with your child at home or at the CAC library.  If you have any questions, ask Ms. Trillian!  Please sign up once- we want to allow every family who is interested to have a chance to come in.  If needed, we can add additional days to the calendar to accommodate interest!

PreK Family Guest Reader Sign-Up Sheet.

Looking forward to reading with you soon!

Here is a letter from student intern, Sanne, who began in the classroom today:

Dear Parents,
I am very happy to become part of the PreK class until the end of May. This is my final teaching practice of my bachelor’s degree and I am excited to learn alongside Ms. Trillian, Ms. Salma, Mr. Hussam, and Ms. Mariam, and the children.

Earlier on the blog, Miss Trillian already introduced me a little bit, but please feel free to have a chat with me and ask any questions you might have.

I’ve been welcomed very warmly here at CAC and look forward to the next months!
Ms. Sanne

Upcoming Events:
Parents, we have our parent community meeting scheduled on March 1st at 2:30.  I would respectfully request to reschedule to Thursday, March 15th at 2:30.  Thank you!

Our Week in PreK:
We had a busy week of explorations as the students engaged with their new study unit, living things and growth.  Many of the students worked playfully with the topic as they pretended to be animals, built homes, cages, or enclosures, or took on the role of "keeper," "parent," or "veterinarian."  The careful observations of the teachers during this first week of exploration, along with the conversations during our meetings, will guide our small group work next week.

The students have been very focused on their "superpower" of writing, and they are so excited to learn new letters each week.  The children showed their writing to their peers and teachers this week to ask "can you read this?" and were excited when others could read what they had written.  It's amazing to see the journey of emergent literacy at this age, and how powerful writing can be when it is made meaningful; when writing is used as a tool for communication, for example.

The students were enthusiastic about our parent events this week and spent some time preparing for family math night.  They created some posters for the "math party" and did their best to write and draw what they expected.  Family math night was a blast and we all wanted to thank you for coming to play with us.  Thanks also for your thoughtful feedback and in case you didn't have the opportunity to share a feedback form with the teachers, we'd appreciate if you can email us and comments or questions you have about the evening so we can continue to improve the event each year!

"Ready, Set, Count!"

We also wanted to thank all of the families for joining us for our family picnic on Thursday, and for your flexibility as our venue changed last minute.  We had a wonderful picnic inside the classroom and really enjoyed the conversations and company!  Looking forward to the next family picnic with you soon.

Here are some more photos from our week together:

Exploring gymnastics with Mr. Greene the PE teacher.

The class photographer gets another great candid shot!

A new arrival on Sunday prompted the students to wonder, "what will go in this box?" There is a large cage in the "vet's office/pet store" dramatic play center.  Most of the students predict that hamsters will go inside.  There will be a surprise for them, likely Monday, to support our unit!  Can you guess what might live inside the wire cage?

Next Week:
In our upcoming week the students will work in small groups to pursue study group interests including: animals and where they live, pets and how to take care of them, and a planting group.

The children will continue their work on conceptual numeracy including first and last in groups of objects.

After-Care:  This week the students will do some projects to focus on writing their names creatively.  Fun!

Reminders:
Families, please remember that school begins at 7:55 am and our core program ends at 1:00.  After-care dismissal is at 3:05.  Your classroom teachers will open the door at the beginning of the day and at the end of the day.  As parent drop-off is available in the PreK classroom, unlike other ES rooms, we will open the door for you and welcome the children inside to begin their day at 7:45- when the ES music begins playing. We understand how hard it can be to wait, but please help support your child in respectful behavior (not shouting or pounding on the glass).  The playground is available from 7:30 am onward and is a great choice for children who are excited to be here and have lots of morning enthusiasm!

If you feel that we are late, please simply knock on the door to let us know.  We are doing our best to be punctual, but the whistle is difficult to hear from the playground and sometimes the morning music doesn't begin promptly at 7:45.  As you can see by all of the exciting games and provocations set up for your children each morning, we are quite busy before 7:45, but our goal is to be at the door to welcome your child with a smile and greeting.  Please support us so that your child can have a warm welcome from his/her teachers to start the day.  Thanks for your understanding!

Upcoming Events:
Student Intern joining PreK February 18

PreK is delighted to welcome Sanne Pfefferkorn to the classroom as a student intern from IETPS program, beginning next week.  She is a fourth year student completing her bachelor's degree in international teaching. CAC will be her sixth teaching experience.  Her previous schools have been in Thailand, Netherlands and Belgium.  She has been a speaker at international conferences in Denmark and India.  Sanne is proficient in German, English and Dutch with basic understanding of French.  Sanne enjoys all types of sports and travel.  She plays the guitar and enjoys cooking.  Please be sure to say hello and help us make Sanne feel welcome in the PreK classroom beginning on February 18th!

We are excited to welcome family readers to the PreK classroom!

Are you interested in reading to your child's class?  This week, we welcomed our first guest readers, Mr. Balasz (KGB teacher), Mrs. Balasz, and their baby Mina.  The children are interested in babies and this supports our unit of study, living things and growth!

The children asked some great questions about the baby, including:

  • Is it good having a baby? -Baylyn
  • How does it (the baby) read? -Casey
  • Why does changing diapers have to be so smelly? -Emily
  • How does it feel changing a diaper? -Casey
  • Why does a baby cry? -Nana
  • Do all babies cry? -whole class
  • Do babies like being in the belly? -Ines
  • Does a baby cough? -Casey
  • Why (do) babies kick their mom's tummy? -Youssef K.

We would like to keep the ball rolling with guest story readers, so if you would like to come and read to us, please click here to sign up for a date and time.

Our Week in PreK:
The students loved exploring and engaging with materials related to their new unit of study, living things.  They have already generated many questions related to this inquiry, based on their dramatic play and building choices during "exploration" time in the classroom during the past few weeks, so the teachers are enthusiastic about following their interests and curiosity to focus on our learning goals over the next two months.

The children worked on concepts of measurement including volume, by discovering through play which containers hold more, less, or the same amount as each other.  Provocations in the sensory table and other areas of the classroom reinforced this concept for students who wished to revisit their learning after small group time.
During small group time, the children role-played "grocery store" and predicted which objects or combinations of objects could fit in which bags (big or small).

Here are some more photos from our week together:
Invitations to emergent writing at the writing center.

A collaborative city.

One of our classroom jobs, the "photographer," gets some great candid shots every day!

Next Week:
The students will continue their questioning and studies about living things, including animals, dinosaurs and plants.

We will finish up our study of measurement and the students will have a chance to play our favorite math games.

Circle Solutions:
This week we had a wonderful opportunity to again work in circle with our fifth grade buddies, Ms. Johnson's class.  The children talked about concepts related to our core value of January, integrity, and introduced the idea of our next core value, Creativity, while discussing some of the things we love about our school.  Each person at circle engaged in a sentence completion by finishing the statement, "the best thing about school is....." Sample answers included, "recess," "the block area," "my friends," and "buddy time," while some children chose to "pass" rather than answering.

After the sentence completion activity, buddies were challenged to illustrate their favorite thing about school, or an idea that might make school even better! After the students all engaged on their work together, we took a class gallery walk and shared ideas about what we love about school and what might make it even better (a class pet, kitten; more buddy time; school ghosts; and more).  We will be hanging up the collaborative work in the hallway to share the students' reflections on gratitude (what they appreciate now) and creativity (new ideas about what could make things better!).

Next week the PreK students will continue talking about creativity in circle time.

Reminders:
We are working to support your child's growing independence as we move gradually closer to kindergarten.  How can you help?  Try to pack clothes and food containers that your child can use by him/herself.  Most children in the classroom are dressing and undressing themselves for outside without assistance.  An expectation is that they can choose, open, eat, and clean up their own snack.  Yes, all children carry their own backpacks and belongings at school, as well!  Do you have similar expectations at home?  Set your child up for success by: reinforcing appropriate independence at home, and giving the child the tools he/she needs to succeed (i.e. clothes and containers that are able to be opened by a four year old!).  A confident, capable child is a successful child in play, learning, and life.

Parents' Corner:
At our parent community meeting, we discussed some of the frustrations that may come up in our lives with four and five year olds.  A big one could be setting limits, followed by the inevitable "power struggles" that can arise when a child does not agree with the limit that has been set by the adult.  Please click here to read more about limit setting with empathy and communication, a strategy used in the classroom that will support your child at home as well.
